iPhone game devs give us their thoughts on the iPad

Posted by on Apr 13, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageWith yesterday’s announcement from Apple of its much hyped "latest creation" — the iPad — and the news that already existing iPhone applications (that means games too, folks) will be playable on the device, we started wondering how the developers of the world felt about this shiny new piece of gadgetry. So we asked a handful of our favorites — Canabalt’s Adam "Atomic" Saltsman, Pocket God’s Dave Castelnuovo, and PopCap’s Andrew Stein, just to namedrop a few — to give us their reactions.

"It’s hard to say anything concrete without actually playing with the thing personally, but I’m optimistic about it continuing to open up video games to even more ‘normal’ people," Saltsman told us. "I’m hopeful that having a big multitouch space will help mediate the whole ‘fat fingers on a tiny screen’ problem." PopCap’s Andrew Stein agreed, telling us "We’ll certainly look at the unique capabilities of the iPad and work hard to utilize those in instances where they can make our games even more fun."

Republic of Fun prez Mike Rasmussen sees things a bit differently, noting the opportunity in the upped horsepower of the device. "From a pure gaming perspective, I’m excited about the additional resolution and horsepower, and really interested to start understanding the 3D performance of the A4 [chip]." But even the most successful app developer on the market — Pocket God creator Dave Castelnuovo — seems a bit reticent of the iPad, telling us he sees "a lot of potential with the device," but his company is going to "wait to see what kind of acceptance the tablet will have" before moving forward with development.

But that’s not all! See the full reactions from a variety of iPhone game developers after the break.

Apple’s Potential of Gaming with iPad2 and iTV Duo

Posted by on Apr 11, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageNot it’s not Game Center! In fact it is the combination of iTV and iPad 2 that brings about a gaming platform that is not for from the Xbox or PS concept of premium big screen gaming.  Apple iTV was previously known to connect with the iPad 2 air TV shows, stream movies and provide corporate on-the-air services. Let’s take Real Racing the high-end game racing simulator game available for iDevices for a test drive. Now imagine playing real racing on HD TV. Firemint, the company that owns the game has announced that Real Racing 2 HD will support wireless gaming using Apple’s AirPlay feature that is also available on iOS 5.

For you out there thinking this AirPlay mirroring then it is to let you know that the game will be utilizing the full power of AirPlay and can only use the iPad 2 as a controller. This is because iPad 2 is capable of supporting heavier graphics computing power. For Real Racing 2 the iPad is the console controller with race data such as laps, position, map, and so on are displayed whereas the TV is the play. The iPad 1 may support the game play but not in dual screen mode.

Of course Apple will never be for the likes of Xbox 360 offering full-featured gaming features and services. But trust me no one will be buying an iPad 2 iTV combo for gaming. It is those who already have it that will be happy with it.

Apart from everything else there are two more things that are of my personal concern. Will the installation of iOS 5 allow this sort of gaming from the iPhone?

Does each app have to be updated in order to be compatible with this new ‘iGaming’ because this system would be really obstructive in smooth gaming!

8 Great Games That Feature Mac-to-PC Multiplayer

Posted by on Apr 9, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageWe know you love annihilating your loved ones and friends (through video games of course). But just because one of you favors Mac over a PC doesn’t mean you should miss out on the epic battles that are waiting  for you.

There are an increasing number of games that feature cross-platform multiplayer, which means that you can use your Mac to play your friends who use a Mac or PC.  Below is a list of some of the best that cross-platform multiplayer has to offer.

Published by Aspyr Media, Sid Meier’s Civilization V is a turn-based strategy title that lets players conquer surrounding territories with the hopes of becoming the ultimate and superior empire. Though the cross-platform multiplayer is currently on hiatus until the latest patch hits Macs in early February, Civ V is still a top-tier game that allows you to defeat your friends on both Mac and PC.

Madballs in Babo: Invasion, which features up to 16 players in multiplayer, challenges you to make your way through a 3D environment, decimating your friends along the way. Madballs is published by Playbrains and is available on both Mac and PC through Steam.

Published by Nimbly Games, Altitude is a unique, side-scrolling aerial combat title.  You’ll fly through obstacles in the sky while shooting down your enemies, and can play with your friends on Mac or PC using Steam.
Killing Floor is a co-op survival horror FPS set in the devastated cities and countryside of England after a series of cloning experiments for the military goes horribly wrong.  The title, published by Tripwire Interactive, allows up to 6 players to battle through hordes of flesh-craving zombies and is available through Steam on PC and Mac.
Guerrilla Bob, published by Angry Mob Games,  is a one-of-a-kind, fast-paced shooter with a cartoon art style that allows players to fight and loot enemies for weapon upgrades and power ups. Available on a variety of platforms (Mac, PC, iPhone, Android), friends can play together via a local Wi-Fi connection.

As founders of the Steam gaming platform, Valve Software naturally has made many of their games available for cross-platform gaming, too. Some of their titles include:

Portal 2, which allows you to play as a robot in a futuristic environment, has players solving puzzles cooperatively to move through portals in this action-adventure title. Portal 2 is particularly unique in that the cross-platform multiplayer  is available for Macs, PCs and the PS3.
Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, are survivor thriller first person shooter titles that challenge players to band together to fight off a zombie outbreak. L4D and L4D2 can be played on Mac, PC and Xbox, though the game is only cross-platform on Mac and PC.
Team Fortress 2 is a free-to-play, team-based title in which teams battle it out against each other by customizing and upgrading their characters. Team Fortress 2 multiplayer is available for Mac and PC through Steam.

BONUS!

Mac lovers and PC lovers alike can look forward to the new year with some impressive titles set to be released this year with the availability of cross-platform multiplayer.

Valve Software is set to release Counter-Strike: Global Offensive sometime in 2012, though the date is still not officially released. Like the original Counter-Strike, CS:GO is a team-based shooter that has been revamped with new characters, levels and graphics. While the beta version was only open to PC players, Counter-Strike’s website states that a full Mac release will be available during the launch of the game.
Those of you that are already addicted to Blizzard’s behemoth MMO World of Warcraft should already know that Mac and PC can play in harmony through Blizzard’s battle.net. The 4th WOW expansion, Mists of Pandaria, is rumored to be released summer 2012.
Another long-awaited game that is releasing this year is Diablo III, also brought to you by Blizzard. This dark fantasy RPG has been a long time coming with a large fan-base already in place. While no official release date has been posted, Diablo’s website does give word that Mac and PC versions will be released simultaneously with the ability for cross-platform multiplayer using Blizzard’s battle.net.

So get your friends online and start gaming without the worry of being left behind just because they have a different computer platform.

Zelda’ games to focus on realistic sword fighting

Posted by on Apr 4, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageVideo gamers who want to train for the next "Legend of Zelda" may want to enroll in fencing classes.

The realistic swordplay in "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" for the Wii console will become central to the series, according to Nintendo executives who produce the games.

"In some games, the people or developers are looking into more photorealistic games," Shigeru Miyamoto, the famed game designer who created the "Zelda" series, told CNN in a recent interview. "We make it so that you can feel as if you have actually shot the arrow with your bow."

"Skyward Sword" is not the first "Zelda" game for the Wii. In its predecessor, "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess," players could swing their sword by shaking the Wii controller, but the sword would not respond directly to the way it was being held.

Adding realistic sword movement to "Skyward Sword" appears to be a winning formula. The game, which came out on November 20, sold the most of any previous "Zelda" game on its first day and reached 600,000 U.S. sales in its first week, according to the NPD Group.

Earlier "Zelda" games used some unusual hardware functions for controlling the characters, including rubbing a stylus on touchscreens, blowing into a microphone and using five screens in one room to navigate.

Some of those ideas haven’t stuck around, but the precise movement translated from swinging the Wii Motion+ remote to the character’s sword onscreen will return, the Nintendo execs said.

Many gamers see the "Zelda" series as one based around quirky adventures and puzzles. However, since the beginning, the games were supposed to have an emphasis on battling. Nintendo wasn’t able to begin realizing this vision until 1998 when the available technology allowed for more realistic environments in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" for the Nintendo 64 system.

"When we started this project many, many years ago with the original NES, it was from the beginning about the sword fighting," Miyamoto said in an interview from Nintendo’s office in Silicon Valley. "Starting actually from the ‘Ocarina of Time,’ the developers were more eager to make more sophisticated movements of the sword competition."

Eiji Aonuma, who directed his first "Zelda" a decade ago and produced the most recent game, has said he expects future games in the series to use the type of precise sword controls from "Skyward Sword." "I honestly think we cannot go back to button controls now," Aonuma told Game Informer magazine.

When we look at today’s fighting games and many other games, sometimes we have to feel it’s rather difficult for us to realize the perfect balance between what you are actually doing with your hand against what you can see and realize or reproduce on your TV set," Miyamoto said. "In other words, I really want people to feel, ‘OK, I’m doing better and better by practicing, for example, my sword fighting.’ "

Free-to-play: Games gratis

Posted by on Apr 2, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageIf there is a king of online gaming, it is World of Warcraft (WoW) — Blizzard Entertainment’s multiplayer world that has achieved a state of ubiquity when discussing massively multiplayer games.

But the king’s subjects are moving away to other lands; last month, the BBC reported that WoW has lost nearly two million subscribers to date since its peak of 12 million in 2010. And WoW is not alone — games requiring a paid subscription are generally losing ground online, but gamers are finding new worlds to explore as more and more titles change to become free-to-play.

Ironically, gaming titles which shift to a free model often find themselves more profitable and successful than before. Several big names in gaming have made this transition in 2011. Age of Conan — Funcom’s online world based on the books by Robert E Howard reported getting 300,000 new players in August — the first month after going free. Sony claimed last month that DC Universe: Online had over one million new players since its switch to a free model in October. Whereas, earlier in the year Team Fortress 2, Champions Online and City of Heroes can now be used without any fee.

Other brand names are following suit. At the end of November, both Star Trek Online and Earthrise announced they would remove subscriptions at the beginning of 2012.

Subscription free gaming isn’t itself new, although in the past it has been associated with titles that were initially developed with the intent of not charging a price. Often lacking the same amount of development and detail as the more expensive, premium titles, free games have been looked down upon by avid gamers. However, the more recent movement of previously commercial subscription titles to subscription-free gaming is adding a new standard to what players expect from free content.

Probably the most high profile shift was of Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO), developed by Turbine and released in 2006. By 2009, its playerbase was dwindling, but the game was given a new lease of life when the transition was made, and thus it managed to attract hordes of new players — especially because of the extra appeal of it previously being a “premium” game. Numerous features of the game were made inaccessible, as were certain choices that could be made during character creation. But the game also added an online shop allowing these things to be bought individually if and when players wanted, as well as items that might be needed during play.

In short, while the game can be legitimately described as playable for free, playing totally for free also introduces some inconviences — players often pay for some of the convenience to be returned. Alternatively, some choose to continue paying a monthly subscription rate to have all the locked content made accessible. These three concurrent approachs — free but limited, paying piecemeal, and subscribing for all content — have become the standard with the formerly-premium games changing.

However, it is a model that works well, and when Turbine announced the same change for it’s title Lord of the Rings Online (LotRO) in 2010, many gamers were surprised. Unlike DDO, LotRO was seen as still successfully running on subscriptions. However, 2010 was a pivotal year — games journalism website Eurogamer recently highlighted an industry report by analysts Screen Digest that it was the first recorded year that income from game subscriptions had fallen. However, in the same time the income from “free” gaming had risen considerably, indeed more than making up the amount lost.

So what does the future hold? Subscription-only titles are becoming rarer, though there are still several titles holding on strong such as Eve Online and Rift, as well as the granddad of MMOs, Ultima Online which is still running on subscriptions 14 years after its release. But even the king WoW itself has acknowledged the attraction of being free-to-play, having started providing a limited amount of free content.

Mass Effect 3 review

Posted by on Mar 21, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageMass Effect 3 brings the conclusion to Commander Shepard’s sci-fi epic in spectacular fashion.

I spent a lot of time on the Citadel in Mass Effect 3. The political heart of the galaxy has become the last refuge of peace in a time of war. Soldiers on shore-leave drink and dance in the giant space-station’s nightclub, Purgatory, forgetting the fight under neon lights. If only for a moment. Worried families pack the embassies, asking after their loved ones while councillors’ of the galaxy’s most powerful species plan the war from their ivory tower. Chatter in the local hospital turns to dwindling supplies and volume of casualties. A docking bay is turned into a makeshift refugee camp, survivors of planets lost cramming into supply containers.

It’s in its quietest moments that Mass Effect 3’s war is most keenly felt. Synthetic beings called the Reapers are trawling the Milky Way, studiously wiping out or harvesting every organic civilisation in the galaxy. You are Commander Shepard, tasked with uniting these threatened species in order to fight back. While most video games task you with saving the world, it’s rare that a developer takes such care in building a world worth saving. The Citadel is the apotheosis of BioWare’s careful construction. This, it says, is what you’re fighting for.

Of course, this is a construction five years in the making. While Mass Effect’s RPG shell has been streamlined as the trilogy hurtles towards its conclusion, favouring action and accessibility, Mass Effect 3 is first and foremost a glorious payoff for those that have been with the series from the beginning, carrying their save game across each entry. The path your Shepard walks is the same as everyone’s else, but the sights you see and the decisions you make are wholly your own. Mass Effect 3‘s greatest achievement is in respecting those decisions, taking the emotional investment you have built in its characters and worlds over half a decade and ensuring it isn’t wasted.

The flip-side is that, despite marketing bluster, Mass Effect 3 is largely impenetrable to newcomers. BioWare, rightly keen to make their final push, leave little time to explain things before the Reapers attack Earth, sending Shepard on his (or her) quest to unite the galaxy. That does call into question the necessity of moving Mass Effect away from its RPG heritage towards dedicated third-person shooter territory, but the fact is that Mass Effect’s form matches its narrative trajectory. This is a war, after all, so there’s a lot of shooting to be done.

Thankfully, Mass Effect 3‘s gunplay is the best in the trilogy. Shepard and his team move with greater fluidity, while the weapons pack an extra punch, resulting in gratifying feedback as you tear through Reaper forces. It’s taken a few pages out of the Gears of War playbook, certainly, filling the holes in Shepard’s arsenal with a strong melee attack and grenades. It’s solid and satisfying, enhanced by Mass Effect’s own twist of class-based special abilities. It’s important that your squad of three has an eclectic spread of powers –technical, ballistic and biotic (read: magic)– to deal with enemy variants that require different types of attack to kill.

The combat is solid and satisfying, though doesn’t match the finest in class. Cover can be erratic, occasionally sticking you to the wrong side of the wall or throwing you into a combat roll straight into enemy fire. Basic mission design, too, isn’t as well-orchestrated as it could be, leaning too heavily on overwhelming force to up the difficulty, rather than challenge you with elegant tactics. While at times the combat can feel too attritional, there are moments that this bluntness works terrifically. Battles can be fatiguing, but the relief of surviving against the odds is palpable, particularly later in the game.

The environments are spectacular theatres of war too. Shepard will often alight on an occupied planet, glorious skyboxes depicting a conflict that stretches far beyond the confines of your own battle. Gigantic reapers stomping through infantry and buildings, red and blue laser fire cutting through the sky, explosions decimating entire areas of a planet. It’s smoke and mirrors, essentially, your own mission maps are neatly disguised corridors. However, it’s hard to underestimate the sense of place and chaos conveyed by BioWare’s newfound confidence in its visual language.

BioWare seems notably more comfortable in every aspect of its vision, in fact. While the overall tone of the game is bleak, enhanced by a darkened colour palette, there’s a playful streak that the first two games po-faced approach could have used. A handful of missions eschew the usual combat fare, adding a welcome variety, while the script is peppered with humour and a lighter touch. It’s a game written from the heart, rather than the head, which makes it very easy to forgive the odd bit of clunk or mawkishness amid the otherwise excellent script.

The narrative successfully carries the gravitas of the blockbuster trilogy Mass Effect has strived to become. There’s a definite sense of urgency to the plot, helped along by the fact that even the most incidental of side missions feel integral to the war effort. Snippets of conversation overheard on the Citadel are added to your journal for investigation, dumped into one clumsy big list. While the intention to give equal priority to everyone’s concerns is admirable, it would have been nice to manage your quests a little easier. It also appears that with so many active quests at one time, the game occasionally struggles to keep up, with some conversations failing to activate at the correct time.

It’s these small acts of kindness, however, that help to deliver such a complete story. While the core plot is strong, delivering emotional gut punches with startling regularity, it’s the incidental detail and characters that invest you so heavily in the fight. As you stroll around the Citadel, you’re left in no doubt that Shepard is the hero, with everyone recognising the potential saviour of the galaxy. It’s hugely empowering, but only because you’re made to feel part of something greater. Shepard is the tip of the spear, but the force behind him stretches far and wide. BioWare do a stellar job of making sure you realise that at every turn. It’s the best kind of role-playing, and while the gameplay elements of that genre are restricted to armour perks and simple skill trees, Mass Effect has a way of projecting you onto your Shepard better than most games manage. And the emotional payoff is well earned.

In addition to the huge single-player, the controversial multiplayer is a surprisingly good addition to the package. A four-player class-based co-op mode, the multiplayer tasks players with holding strategic war locations that Shepard secures in the main campaign. A pleasing handshake that gives the multiplayer a narrative beat in such a narrative-focussed game. While the mode may be too slight to offer long-term investment, the opportunity to play as different species across a strong selection of co-op maps is most welcome, even if it’s sullied by micro-transactions offering access to new gear. The missions are tough and a lot of fun, though, offering a Mass Effect flavoured twist on Gears of War’s horde mode. Success in multiplayer also greases the wheels in the campaign, allowing Shepard to build his forces quicker, though it isn’t mandatory to achieve the ‘best’ ending.

BioWare, then, have managed to pull everything together for a terrific finale to their ambitious trilogy. While the individual parts of Mass Effect 3 aren’t perfect, the whole is a remarkable achievement. It’s an adage that’s true of the entire series. Each game has its flaws and do not escape criticism as standalone titles. But the commitment to the long-game reaps its own rewards for BioWare, with five years of dedication from creators and players alike coming together for a suitably heart-wrenching end to arguably the finest video game series of this generation.

Japanese Mobile Gaming Company, Gree, Expands into US

Posted by on Mar 15, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageIn a move that could have a major impact on the US mobile gaming and mcommerce worlds, Japanese social and mobile gaming company Gree has acquired US mobile gaming startup OpenFeint for about 100 million dollars. The collaboration brings together Gree’s 25 million users with OpenFeint’s 75 million users, giving the team an impressive reach right off the bat.

So far there are no plans to completely merge the two groups, but Gree has opened an office in San Fransisco, near OpenFeint’s Silicon Valley offices. Also, the entire team at OpenFeint is staying on board to continue growing out the company. Performance incentives have been put in place and the entire organization is excited for the opportunity that the influx of cash and partnership with Gree will bring to the table. Says OpenFeint CEO Jason Citron:

“We are excited that Gree shares our belief in the OpenFeint network and are ecstatic to partner with a renowned global leader to build a multi-billion dollar business. Together, we will deliver the strongest global ecosystem of gaming networks to our combined 100 million users.”

That’s really what mcommerce/mgaming team-ups like this hint at: constructing a large-scale entertainment company that can deliver content a variety of ways (socially, via mobile ecommerce software platforms, etc.). Users are looking for their entertainment through increasingly varied delivery systems: smartphones, tablets, and internet-ready HD TVs. It’s a changing world and Gree and OpenFeint are ready for it – even as brick-and-mortar companies like Gamestop expand into the social sphere. Gree’s Japanese rival, DeNa, is also ready for the change. They recently purchased US game development company NGmoco. They dropped over 400 million in the deal.

With all this expansion in the mobile and social gaming sphere, heavy hitters like Zynga could have a rude awakening in store for them when competition heats up. Migration into mobile gaming is natural for gaming and mcommerce companies as smartphones are increasingly showing themselves to be a viable revenue stream for ecommerce software platforms. Games have already proven their earning potential in the social realm, where the sales of virtual items in exchange for real money have allowed established companies like Zynga to bring in millions of dollars.

Gaming companies aren’t the only ones muscling into the mobile ecommerce software sphere, credit card companies are already starting to mark their territory with their own mobile payment systems. This is in addition to the revenue stream from traditional phone payment methods like charging purchases made using a cell phone directly back to the user’s bill, which is then paid at the end of the month.

Numerous retailers are using mobile ecommerce software embedded into their apps to increase sales, either directly through the mcommerce capability of the app or through in-store sales after price comparison and other research that has been done via the app and the user’s smartphone’s additional capabilities. With the ever-expanding smartphone market, especially the Android system, branching out into mcommerce and mgaming is a smart move.

Social Games Winning, 3D Games Failing, says EA

Posted by on Mar 5, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageGames Industry Black Book H1 2012 Online available now

One of the world’s largest games companies says 3D games are not catching on, and that it is focusing on social gaming for big profits.

In a shareholder meeting, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello expressed his disappointment in 3D gaming sales. “Frankly, we have not seen a big uptake for 3D gaming. We haven’t seen a big uptake for 3D televisions in the home, at least not yet. And we’re not here trying to drive the market, we’re here to react to what customers are looking for.”

Instead, Riccitiello is getting the biggest bang for his buck by directing his developers to create 3D games on a 2D display, which he says “provide the greatest entertainment experience.” Beyond that, he said he’s “seen really high returns” with online and social games, with more on the way, such as The Sims Social on Facebook.

“Right now we’re seeing better growth focusing on a different technology innovation — online and social,” Riccitiello said. “So our allocation of resources have been toward the new innovations that are growing more rapidly.”

This is not good news for the 3D gaming world, which is reeling from poor sales of the Nintendo 3DS, a glasses-free 3D handheld gaming device on which the industry pinned high hopes. In fact, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced he’s cutting his paycheck in half, taking responsibility for slow sales of the 3DS that resulted in Nintendo’s first-ever quarterly loss. At the same time, Nintendo slashed the price of the 3DS, from $249 to $169.

The picture isn’t much better for 3D in the movie world. As a large number of theaters have upgraded to digital projectors capable of displaying 3D movies, audiences don’t seem as interested in paying more for 3D, according to analyst Richard Greenfield of Wall Street’s BTIG. There are complaints of dim screens displaying both 3D and 2D movies. And on the home front, we just reviewed a Sony 3D HDTV. Notwithstanding the paucity of 3D content available, it gave us headaches and seemed a lame gimmick.

It’s starting to look like the entire 3D craze was designed to benefit those who sell electronics and movie tickets a lot more than those who would view movies and play games using the technology.

3 ways social gaming can benefit brands

Posted by on Mar 1, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageAccording to video game research company  GameVision,  20.1 million people in the UK regularly play games across a variety of platforms and over half these people (10.4 million) visit online social gaming websites every month.

With the likes of Disney,  Google and MTV Networks investing heavily in this industry, social gaming could become a popular medium for brands to interact with their audience.

But aside from being a fun and exciting way to engage with customers, what benefits does social gaming offer to brands and businesses?
1. Increase purchase rates

This is the biggy and probably the main factor that will push businesses into investing in social gaming.

According to Ravi Mehta, Vice President of virtual goods company Viximo, the secret to increasing revenue through gaming lies in branded social games.

Mehta estimates that non-branded social games generate 5 to 20 cents per user through the sale of virtual goods, while branded social games will earn 10 to 35 cents per user because the games reach an “already interested”, pre- established community for that brand.

Mehta also believes that branded social games encourage a higher rate of conversion. User testing of  Facebook credits, Facebook’s virtual currency that will enable gamers to  buy virtual goods across the Facebook platform, has already shown that people paying with Facebook credits are more likely to complete a purchase than those who don’t.

Aside from utilising Facebook credits, brands also have other options for generating revenue from social gaming. Games could incorporate virtual stores, for example, where users can then click through to a brand’s website or ecommerce store  as part of the game.

Brands could also generate revenue through downloads. This could either be in the form of  game or app downloads,  or virtual goods. Market Research company NPD group estimates revenue from game related downloads will reach $6bn by 2013.
2. Advertising

Another obvious way for brands to make use of social gaming is through advertising.

The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has found  that 79% of gamers respond positively to in-game advertising and brands should make the most of this.

Advertising could take the form of anything from simple product placement within a game to interactive videos or a fully themed social game.

Social gaming could also be used to push offers and discounts where gamers are rewarded with virtual credits when they interact with in-gaming advertising. These virtual credits could then be used to buy goods either within the game or from a brand’s ecommerce site.

As we’ve discussed before, social media doesn’t just take place online and social gaming could be the right place for brands to experiment with offline/online advertising and social media. Brands could develop games where the reward is a discount code that can be redeemed against in-store purchases. This type of discount scheme or reward will also help encourage brand loyalty and develop customer advocacy.
3. Targeted Marketing

Social gaming forces marketers to think carefully about their target market. In order for a game to succeed it must directly appeal to the needs, wants and interests of the people you are trying to sell to. But get it right and you will reap the rewards of  developing a game that engages the right audience.

Brands who do create and develop social games can learn a lot about their audience, including gaming habits, demographic and  location. If the game is a download it will also enable brands to collect email addresses and even perhaps telephone numbers in a more effective way than other outbound marketing activity.

However, before implementing a social game, brands should ultimately think about two key things – is their target audience participating in social gaming, or likely to do so, and, more importantly, how to measure the success of the game against key objectives.

Check Out Some Dirt On The New Nintendo 3DS

Posted by on Feb 28, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageHave you been waiting for the Nintendo 3DS to arrive?  Reading and reading all the information you can about it just to curb your excitement for your new gadget?  We have read about some of the FAQ’s about the 3DS and wanted to share a couple of them for you here.

How many versions will there be?  According to Nintendo there will be an American, Japanese and European/Austalian release of the Nintendo 3DS.  These will also come with pre-installed region codes and games that are specifically sold to each region will only work in those regions.  So, it might not be smart to go ahead an import one of these when they come out in Japan.

Another big question for a unit with wireless capability usually is, how long will the battery last?  According to a couple of tests, in full brightness with 3D OFF and no wireless communication, the battery lasted over 3 hours.  The full brightness will take out the battery the fastest and if you play on the lowest setting, you can get five hours of play time easily.

How much work is it to connect to a wireless network?  Some users complained the DSi was a pain the ass to figure out network configuration,  but apparently with the 3DS, it’s just a matter of pressing the wireless button, submitting your password and that’s it.  Very simple and sure to be a plus in any user review.

Can you play your DS games on the 3DS?  Yes you can.  You will be using the DS’s old WEP wireless menus and settings to get online with the DS games, but it does work.

There are a couple of the most popular questions about the new Nintendo 3DS, if you want to read the rest of the article, you can find it here.

Nintendo 3DS May Surpass DS First Year Sales

Posted by on Feb 20, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imagePeople doubted that the Nintendo 3DS portable gaming console could be as successful as its predecessors. Despite the price cut it got, it looks like the Nintendo 3DS could beat DS’ first year sales numbers

Nintendo 3DS’ price slash was not embraced by most consumers but it generated enough sales to make a difference. Sales of the console rose in August and at present it has already passed the 1.65 million units sold in the United States. It is on course to beat the original DS within the same span.

The Nintendo DS has sold 50 million units since it was launched. Comparing the first year sales of both the DS and the 3DS, the DS sold 2.37 million with 50 percent of its sales coming with the holiday season. The original DS is the best-selling game platform in the United States of all time. Analysts are expecting the Nintendo 3DS to have a good holiday season.

As a whole, Nintendo is enjoying a good year. Last October, it sold 675,000 combined hardware units. 250,000 of which were 3DS units and 180,000 were other models of its DS line. This year alone, it sold at least 7 million hardware units with more than 55 million units of games for the consoles.

Mobile Gaming to be Revolutionized by the iPhone 4S

Posted by on Feb 15, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageThe skeptics would like to say that Apple may have released the iPhone 4S as a ‘slightly’ upgraded version of the iPhone 4. They have completely failed to understand the new specs of the iPhone 4S, which represents a major transformation in the world of mobile gaming and overall Smartphone performance. It actually is the best phone in the market currently to push the limits of gaming.

So what do all these specs mean for games on the iPhone? For starters, you can basically compare the power of iPhone 4S processor, graphic speeds, and complexity to those of the gaming consoles. Additionally, many of the previous games on the iPhone 4 can now support even higher graphics thanks to the increased power of the iPhone 4S. The major game changing factors are described below…

Flash Based Gaming

Flash based gaming will now be better than ever before, thanks to the upgraded specs of the iPhone 4S. Games like ‘Machinarium’ and ‘Infinity Blade 2’ were ported to the iPad 2 to take advantage of the A5 chip. The iPhone 4S will now open an exciting market for similar games. We can expect an increasing amount of flash based games to be made available on the new iPhone 4S.

The Unity Engine for Gaming

This game engine has been in use in the iOS games for many years. As displayed in the recent launch of the new game called ‘Shadowgun’, the graphic quality of this engine was impressive even on the A4 chips. The introduction of the A5 chip will surely improve the graphics even further.

What about the previous hardware?

Although, Apple would want to keep their focus on the hardware capabilities of the iPhone 4S, they must make sure that their old hardware particularly the iPhone 3GS remains in the action. Apple generally tends to keep their devices in use for at least 2 years. The iPhone 3GS serves as a means for keeping the existing customers intact and bringing more customers into the fold of the iOS. The strong point to this is that previous iPhones like 3G and 3GS are still more than capable to run the latest gaming apps.

Apple can still boast about that fact that popular games like ‘Infinity Blade 2’ which were used as a benchmark to show off the new iPhone 4S features can still be played on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

So what do you guys think? Can the iOS games really replace console based games? Let us know in the comments below.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Breaks Sales Records

Posted by on Feb 13, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is enjoying record breaking sales numbers after it was released this week. Modern Warfare 3 is the latest first-person shooter from Activision. It’s doing well in the market even though it had to compete against EA’s Battlefield 3, which was released last month. Call of Duty

There were reports that Modern Warfare 3 is on its way to break first week sales records, which is a title that belongs to its predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops that was released by Activision last year. Modern Warfare 3 has already broken the record for the most pre-order copies.

On launch night, Activision said that 1.5 million gamers have lined up outside 13,000 stores for a chance to buy a copy at midnight. Analysts estimated that sales are more than that number. One even stated that at least 18 million copies would be sold by the start of the calendar year.

Analysts from Extreme Tech computed the amount of electricity used by online gamers and they found out that it would be more than enough to power a nuclear power plant. At present, Black Ops got the record for five0day opening sales revenue at $650 million across the globe. Amazon reported that pre-orders for MW3 is 32 percent more than Black Ops.

Mario Sports Mix Review (Wii)

Posted by on Feb 10, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

imageThe new Mario Sports Mix is the Wii Sports latest addition to their list of sports games. Different from the other Mario sports type games, this one includes four different games: hockey, basketball, volleyball, and dodge ball.

Mixing four different sports games makes the Mario Sports Mix a bit less intense. For instance, it doesn’t have a career mode like the Mario Super Sluggers baseball did.  However, the Mario game doesn’t water down the four sports, like Wii Sports does. They are a milder version in some ways though, with three on three and two on three play instead of normal five on five play for hockey and baseball.

However, the games work the traditional way by using either the remote control with a nun-chuck type configuration or you can just hold the remote sideways. That’s a better setup than Wii Sports, which had to use a motion control demonstration method. Using the traditional type of controls is a feature that most users welcome.

The new Mario game keeps each sport’s basic functions easy while it creates another layer of somewhat advanced techniques such as dekes, fakes, and special shots, which skilled users can try out. Some of the controls require that users shake the remote control, but none of them require any sort of gestures be recognized. This lets the game keep a fast paced tempo that’s tantamount with these sorts of games. All of the Mario sports games have constantly made up for their simple nature by giving the users an unquenchable need for speed and adds some barely controlled chaos. This new one keeps to that tradition quite well.

Mario Sports Mix lives up to more of the series conventions by going wacky with the Mario icons. The game has a limited list of characters users can choose to play with, and there are no new ones unless you consider the user’s Mii avatar.

However, each game has a good choice of themed stadiums and courts which have interesting rules, circumstances and occasionally some obstructions. A controllable incursion of “Mario Kart”-style unique items lets users briefly disrupt the opposing game plans, and each character has super moves that are extremely difficult to stop.

The game’s lukewarm one-player depth is below par: The customary Mushroom/Flower/Star Cup tournaments are there, but also as usual, the complicatedness is too easy to make it hard for even the moderately talented users. Solo players can choose to play online, and the game’s interface and statistics tracking and its performance are good. However, there isn’t much of a voice chat support either, so that makes that experience not as good as it could be.

However, per usual with the Mario games, this one is especially its best if you play with other users that are right there with you. The mix of its tempo, pandemonium and plain but refined controls makes this a great party game.

The Weird and Wonderful World of Warcraft Cataclysm

Posted by on Jun 28, 2011 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

world-of-warcraft-cataclysm

The fans of the World of Warcraft Cataclysm are in for a treat if they do a simple internet search on their favorite topic. This is a development on the earlier versions with an increase in the content level and the interaction requirements. There are treats such as the Azeroth experience which will bring happy memories for the people that know the game. The adventure is improved by two playable races as well as the power games that mark the visceral quality of the structure. Quests and challenges are part of the mix in the game and they take on new meanings under this version. The dramatic changes and shatter effects will create an immediacy which is not easy to find.

The World of Warcraft has made Azeroth a central character and is going to be altered on a permanent basis. He has been corrupted by the notorious Dragon Aspect Deathwing. He then comes out of the subterranean sleep to erupt onto the surface. There are many ruins that fall on his way to the top. Furthermore the Horde and Alliance race will get to the center of the cataclysm which means that the kingdom of Azeroth will experience changes in its power structures. There are heroes that are waiting to be discovered. They will primarily get recognition for the ability to protect their areas from the destruction. The World of Warcraft Cataclysm demo will be able to showcase all these exciting developments.

The release date is on the 07th of December 2010 just towards the Christmas season. There is also a great additional treat in as much as the World of Warcraft is now available on Mac systems. As if that were not enough, there are new continents to be explored as well as new islands. Some of the inaccessible land areas will also be opened up. Players can then cover a lot of territory and increase their understanding of the game. Buyers are advised to go for the pre order catalog because it seems that everyone is already queuing up for the latest version of the game.

At the moment the World of Warcraft Cataclysm review is primarily based on speculation but the real thing is in the pipeline. There are also rumors that there will be an interval pattern in the release in order to give the players the opportunity to review all the elements that work with the game. Booking early will give the fans the best opportunity to see the new developments in all their glory. The world of gaming and Sci-fi is about to get a lot more interesting. There is such wide scope for the play that almost anyone can join at any stage. The old timers will go back for sentimental reasons while the new entrants will be overcome with curiosity about the new story.

FIFA-Soccer-11_US_ESRB_PS3boxart_160w

Anyone with working pairs can know about the latest release and that is EA is launching FIFA 11. This had been released yesterday by EA. FIFA 11 is one of the latest chance by the EA that allows you take Madrid to Wembley. This is EA’s global bottom line. As the game has been released yesterday and it has a few of the major thing that should be taken in to account. It hardly has little fun little campaign behind it. You will not get away from it the moment you see it.

EA SPORTS FIFA 11-development team

Now for all those FIFA 11 soccer fans, this game will be the perfect thing for giving you all kinds of soccer experience. It is believed that talented team at EAC that includes Matt Bilbey, Kaz Makita and Dave Rutter, have produced a well-featured and sharp game. This has produced another great soccer experience. It is all due to FIFA development team. I still remember one of the first weeks when it was briefed on the concepts of entrance in to martial arts experience. With this EA games experience, it is surely going to be a tournament where players from all over the country would be involved in playing and participating. In fact, when it was released last night in New York, it kicked off with some great players from New York Red Bulls. In fact, even I can recognise some players who participated. If I am not mistaken then surely they were Thiery Henry and Rafa Marquez. I could be familiar with these players in the release of FIFA 11 by EA games.

Xbox live Subscription

When Xbox live game was in to market in 2002, there had been much changes and entertainment experience that has been provided by this game to all audiences and viewers. It was since then that the price was constant. But the entertainment methods and game experiences were being developed to make it audience’s favourite online game. Not much reactions has been seen when Microsoft decided to increase the Xbox live gold membership tariff. Sometimes, they also provide discounted Xbox live subscription etc. So all these are means by, which Xbox live game is in touch with viewer’s choice. Posted by on Jun 22, 2011 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

A brief introduction:

At the moment, we enjoy of a lot strategy PC games with all the advanced features available in the market. We’ll allow you to read more about StarCraft with this StarCraft II preview.

Let’s read about it:

We probably know a lot about military video games with a futuristic vision. I am absolutely secure that Blizzard Entertainment –the StarCraft developers— feels pretty proud of the result they have had with this product. When it comes to high-level strategy video games we should consider StarCraft II. Definitely this is an amazing console video game that you should evaluate and more if you have been playing since its first version. Something you need to know in this short StarCraft review is that this is more than a simple console video game. StarCraft II –in my opinion based on the American military army point of view for the future— is a military video game in the category of science-fiction and can be played in real time.  StarCraft –as video game— was recognized in 1998 with an Award in its first version.

The current version of StarCraft has the subtitle of “Wings of Liberty” whose critics have been very positive. The game experience is dynamic, very emotionant; with adrenaline everywhere and it make you develop your natural military skills. In its version for PC you can run it on Windows and Mac OS. Furthermore, it is recommended use a computer with a processor 2.6 GHz and 2GB of RAM memory mainly for Windows Vista and Window 7. Despite all technical description, features and system requirements, StarCraft II players feel they can release all their adrenaline in this video game.

Tell me more about the game play:

This installment has been modified with all the elements basically demanded by StarCraft users. As matter as fact, the game is more based on multiplayer capabilities with a solid internet connection. This is something that empowers players and makes them capable to play in real-time over the web. The game is very fun and you can find a long list of StarCraft II units in different website available and free of charge.  In addition, if you need read about StarCraft II cheats, officialstarcraft2cheats.com is a wonderful place I often recommend to my readers. It is important you know that the more you understand the logic of the game the better is going to be for you complete this game. That’s why is very important you read everything you can about StarCraft II wiki because you will get useful information for your performance during the game.

Cast of the game:

In StarCraft II you can find some of the most remarkable voice actors and actress such as Michael Dorn as Tassadar, Robert Clotworthy as Jim Raynor and more important actors.  For StarCraft II developers this is a very important step in the creation of this game because above all, commercial part is the most important for getting the expected revenue and evidently, use the voice of professional actors is a plus for this high quality PC game.

starcraft 2

Platform of StarCraft II:

We should consider that StarCraft II is a very important video game and that’s why it will have a huge demand for different versions. In fact, the PC version has minimum requirements that are superior to other strategy games. We haven’t seen this version of the game in some of the most popular consoles such as Nintendo Wii, PlayStation or Xbox because this is a PC game originally designed for Microsoft Windows and computers running Mac OS. However, thanks to the cooperation of Wine, StarCraft II is currently running in on all GNU/Linux versions. This is an amazing thing because today there are several users around the globe running their computers with Ubuntu, Fedora and other GNU/Linux variations. If you want to have more information about StarCraft II and the use of diverse platforms you can find more resources in the web related to this issue and read articles and some StarCraft II review.

“It is a time of war! Demons, Aliens and Heretics decent upon the imperium of man. The battle lines are drawn, who do you serve?”

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, it’s a call of one of the most astounding MMOs in the gaming arena. No one really knew much about it, until the E3 2010 revealed the mind-boggling trailer of Warhammer 40000 MMO. A THQ and Vigil Games’ production, now officially known as Warhammer 40000: Dark Millennium Online, was first announced in March 2007. It’s a role-playing game which is going to be a masterpiece, said Danny Bilson. Prior to its release, this game has already received many awards and nominations; Best MMO, Best Trailer, and Best PC Game to name a few.

darkmillenium

Ascribed by its name, the game is set in the 41st millennium where all the relevant races are represented. As a player, you will be allowed to select your race and enjoy the epic world of warfare. The actual number of all those races, however, is unconfirmed. Warhammer online is THQ’s huge investment which, the company is positive, will pay off.

Vigil Games’ General Manager David Adams explains that this game will be much more intense, sensational, and intimate with extensive battlegrounds, general brutality and all the darkness of a war.

Although many other details are still unrevealed, Warhammer online continues to gain popularity among the gamers and critics. Sources say that the game is, nevertheless, under development and will not be released until 2012. So for now, watch the trailer and get enchanted!

Impact of technology on Olympics

Posted by on Jun 22, 2011 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

beijing

Many technology stunts have characterized recent Olympic Games notably the recent Beijing Olympic Games. The accuracy with which the opening ceremony events were conducted in terms of efficiency in transmission of the programs highlights the impact of technology on Olympics. Many viewers the world over were able to use computer and mobile phones to follow the proceedings taking place thousands of miles away.

Improvements were very far-reaching in terms of the extent to which they enabled people view the events in the clarity of their television, computer and mobile phones screens. The high level of accuracy was also evident in the procedures that were used to carry out the events. Recording of points was accurate and there was no need for controversy to arise.

The passive viewed on the other of the continent followed the events just with the same sense of suspense as the people seated in the Beijing stadiums. The 8000 frames per second camera was the tool of the Olympic Games. This is the camera that tells us that a record has been broken. The normal televisions on which we watch the event have 24 to 30 frames per second speed. This is a good comparison that shows you the sense of accuracy and precision that technology has brought into the Olympic Games.

It is very disgusting for someone to train for four years for a ten-second sprint only to have the results contested by an opponent. Being told to repeat the sprint would be a blow to the whole event. This is not a good thing considering the long history of success that the event has. Ultrasonically welded LZR cameras were responsible for the accuracy with which the score were counted during the many events that were on show during the Beijing Olympic Games. It is surprising the extent of the awesomeness that Chinese authorities sought to achieve and which they achieved in great measure anyway. Talk of 8 hours of cloud seeding 8hours before the event that made the whole stadium, look like scientific movie scene. This revealed the impact of technology on Olympics not only in Beijing but also elsewhere in the future.

Swimming events involving underwater footage needed more than the ordinary camera. Here comes the underwater skateboard camera. This is the camera that enabled you to see with sparkling clarity those swimmers as they broke record after record in the Beijing Olympics. There was so much action going on that you could have found time to ask yourself how those photos could have been shot. This wonder Moby cam just needed to be launched on a skateboard and then driven along the swimmers who had the habit of changing themselves into half-fish.

The USB Freedom Stick was the tool of convenience for journalists who had gone to Beijing to cover the Olympics Games only to find the information they were sending to their newsrooms being censored by Chinese authorities. They had to look around for this amazing gadget of technology since all you need to have your privacy guaranteed is plug kit into your computer. It enables the user to surf the internet in the comfort of his synonymy and secrecy. No more questions from agents who know not a thing about journalism. And of course this impact of technology on Olympics showed that innovation can be used to accomplish positive ends.

Need for Speed: Shift – Shifting to a new level

Posted by on Jun 22, 2011 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

nfs
‘NFS: Shift’, the latest instalment in the long running racing videogame franchise ‘Need for speed’ has been released. Initially announced in January 2009, it is published by Electronic Arts like all of the recent games in this series. The main and unique feature that separates NFS: Shift from previous titles such as ‘NFS: Undercover’ and ‘NFS: ProStreet’ is that it focuses more towards simulation racing to enhance the driver experience and realistic drifting compared to the arcade racing style of the older titles. Hence, it is competing directly against successful titles such as Gran-Turismo series and Race Driver GRID.

Released on 15th, 17th and 18th in USA, Europe and the UK respectively and is available on Microsoft Windows, Sony Playstation 3 and the Microsoft X-Box 360, it features the in-car view (unique for every car) which hasn’t been seen in any of NFS titles for a long time, in-fact since NFS: Porsche Unleashed, which was released back in 2000. This feature has been welcomed and due to the improvements made over the previous titles, most of the reviews on this game have been positive, for example IGN awarded it an outstanding score of 9/10, 8/10 was awarded by VideoGamer.com whereas GameSpot gave it a critic score of 7/10, which is respectable.
