Who we are and where we came from. is your home for personalised and unique gift ideas.

Created in November 2005 with my co-founder and friend Giles, shortly before the birth of my daughter, has grown immensely thanks to your support. And, although we’ve never deviated from our original commitment to offering unique and personal gifts that cannot be purchased on the High Street, we’re worked hard to develop new ideas and further extend our range of products.

We started the company with our Personalised Calendar, and even today, it’s still one of our most popular products.

However, although we attribute some of our success to our commitment to offering great gifts at affordable prices, none of it would have been possible without the support and enthusiasm of people like you. Indeed, as many of our gifts are designed and produced exclusively ‘in-house’, all of our best selling items have been created as a consequence of customer suggestions.

Today, we are a leading online retailer of Gifts, Personalised Gifts & Unusual Gifts. We have been featured two years running within the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100. The prestigious national league table ranks Britain’s top 100 private companies with the fastest-growing sales over the past three years.

Many of Traidcraft’s food and cotton products have the Fairtrade logo on their packaging. The Fairtrade Mark is a registered certification label for products sourced from producers in developing countries. The logo is licensed by the Fairtrade Foundation, of which Traidcraft is a founder member.

The Fairtrade Mark is only available on certain products which have internationally-agreed Fairtrade standards. Most products carrying the Fairtrade Mark are food or cotton.

Traidcraft has its own purchasing policy to ensure that we operate under rigorous fair trade criteria, even if the Mark is not yet available or where we are supporting producers to move towards certification.

Seamus has demonstrated a sustainable approach to business in many ways. He is an active member of local discussion groups, sharing best practice with his peers, and also organises a collaborative buying group to minimise input costs for his own farm and his neighbours. He is a participant in a focus farm scheme, which has seen more than 350 farmers visit his farm to share experiences and knowledge, and is committed to achieving the best technical performance possible.

But his achievements do not stop there. He has increased the efficiency of utilisation of farm manures by using precision GPS application, minimising the need for artificial fertiliser. He has committed to planting 450m of new hedgerow each year for 5 years to improve biodiversity, and has fenced off species rich grassland and watercourses to protect these important environmental areas. He has also invested in a new poultry house to improve animal welfare, which includes double glazed windows to allow the birds to enjoy natural daylight.

All orders placed before 3:00pm are despatched from our warehouse the same day via Royal Mail 1st Class or our couriers DPD, subject to stock availability and security checks. The delivery method used is based on the size, weight and value of the order.

If your parcel of goodies is being delivered by our DPD Courier, it will require a signature on arrival. If you’re not in they will attempt to deliver your parcel to one of your immediate neighbours, and will pop a card through your door to let you know which neighbour has it.

What is

Wouldn’t life be a little dull without a few weird and wonderful things to play with along the way? After all, getting old is inevitable, but growing up is optional.

That’s why Firebox scours the world, looking for the very latest gadgets, toys, games and other cool stuff. We search high and low for gifts with a twist. Products that are inspirational, quirky, bizarre and downright fun.

We’re very selective though – so only the most original, exciting and unique gifts get picked.

From Las Vegas to Los Alamos, Tokyo to Tashkent, we scour the world looking for the ‘next big thing’, then make it available through our award-winning website and mail order catalogue.

You’ll find products at Firebox long before they make it to the mass market. It is our mission to always be first with the latest hot stuff.

How did all this happen? began life in early 1998 as, an internet retailer founded by university friends Michael Smith and Tom Boardman. Operating out of Cardiff, the company saw rapid initial growth due to the huge success of Michael and Tom’s (since much-imitated) invention, the Shot Glass Chess Set. In the Summer of 1999 the company moved to London and relaunched as In 2002 the company opened its first combined Head Office and Distribution Centre located in South London.

Initially a “pure-play” Internet only business, Firebox has successfully moved into the Mail Order, Corporate and Wholesale/Trade sectors:

  • Website – The website attracted nearly 10m visits in 2009 and served 48m page impressions

  • Email Newsletter – sent fortnightly to over 550,000 recipients;
  • Catalogue – Published several times a year with an annual circulation exceeding 7m copies
  • Corporate – Firebox has provided corporates such as Yahoo, Oracle, Five, Siemens and Abbey National with innovative solutions for incentives and promotions
  • Wholesale – Firebox provides a range of branded products to retailers looking to expand their range with our exciting and exclusive product lines.

…and along the way we have grown rapidly from the initial partnership of the two founders to a core team of over 30 staff. In 2008 the business generated revenues of over £11m and first hit profitability a couple of years after launch in 2002.

In fact, our growth has been so spectacular that in late 2004 Firebox was listed by the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 as the 13th fastest growing privately owned business in the UK.

Our Story

Seeking out the people who create the unusual, the inspired and just plain ‘out there’. That’s what is all about. So how did it all begin?

Hunting out the great and the original is second nature to founders Holly Tucker and Sophie Cornish, and it led them to have a sparkly idea back in 2006: to create a place where you could find all those charming, unique and carefully-made things that you sometimes stumble across in cool urban markets, village fairs and tucked-away boutiques.
